What Is Technique?

When a ballerina is at the barre, a lyrical dancer is stretching, or a hip-hop dancer is doing battle, they all have one thing in common--technique. Their technique is how well they are performing. For example, a simple technique strategy is control. In ballet, dancers need control over every muscle in their body, from where their head is placed to how turned out their feet are. Even how their fingers are placed matters. If a ballerina has good technique, this means they have good control. Another example is how hip hop dancers perform. To have good hip hop technique, dancers need to be strong and their movements must be sharp with high energy and confidence. Well trained technique also involves having a good performance. This means dancers must have perfectly extended hands, pointed feet, and entertaining facial expressions. When all of these things come together and are controlled, a dancer has perfect technique.

Here, you see hip-hop dancers with high energy, tense movements, and overall good technique.

Above, you see the feet of a dancer, and how well their controlled turnout is.

In this picture, you see a dancer with pointed toes, good, long extensions, and everything about her position shows her good technique.
