The Top 10 Styles of Dance!

Ever wondered what styles of dance are the most popular as of right now? Well, you came to the right place! Here are the top 10:

10. Irish Dancing

Like river dancing and other folk dances, Irish dancing is made up of very fast foot and leg movements. Dancers will wear knee socks and either soft or hard shoes.

9. Line Dancing

This dance will be associated with country music and many cowboys like this style. Dancers do not have a special kind of shoes, but most people like to wear cowboy boots.

8. Highland Dancing

Created in Scotland, this dance involves arm and leg strength and should not be confused with Irish Dancing. Highland Dancing has more leg movements and you will need more stamina.

7. Contemporary

This type of dance involves many other styles, including modern dance, ballet, lyrical, and jazz. Contemporary dancers usually are barefoot on stage and do not have your average costumes you see ballerinas wearing.

6. Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop has very high energy, sharp movements, and strong choreography. Hip-Hop can also be freestyle, or improvised. Hip Hop is based off of street dancing.

5. Lyrical

Lyrical, similar to contemporary, is based off of ballet and tells a story through body language and emotions. Lyrical dances are almost always to popular music in the contemporary genre.

4. Modern Dance

Some people like to think this style was a rebellion from ballet. In Modern Dances, you do not always have to point your feet, depending on what the story is you are trying to tell. This style also tells a story, usually about love or something sad.

3. Jazz

Similar to Hip-Hop, Jazz is very high energy. Jazz has been influenced from many other styles, including African Dance and tap, and is now considered a lot like stronger dance genres.

2. Tap

This style, also known as "musical feet" is a dance almost completely focused on moving your feet. Dancers who tap wear special shoes made just for tap, with metal on the bottom so you can hear them dancing.

1. Ballet

Not hip-hop, not modern, but ballet. Probably the hardest and most underrated styles. From ballet slippers, to pointe shoes, to pink tights, to tight buns, ballet is the foundation of dance. Pretty much any style has been created from ballet. That is why ballet is number one.
