Dealing With Stage Fright

As a dancer, I feel a LOT of emotions during a recital. As I explained previously in "Recitals," I get a little nervous backstage. Actually, most dancers do. It is a completely normal way to feel. But how do you deal with your nerves? The first thing you should know if you feel nervous before a performance is that this feeling is okay. Actually, this is a good feeling. When you get that butterflies in your stomach, it usually means you care about this performance and want it to be the best one yet. Being anxious will only help you do better since you feel like you have to do a good job. Although recitals are a blast, how do you get rid of the stress before going on stage? Try taking some deep breaths. Not the small, rushed ones, but the really deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Close your eyes and relax for a minute or two. Focus on your breathing and nothing else, even if it's hard with loud music playing. By focusing on your breathing, you're keeping your mind off of the stress of performing. Before you know it, you will feel calm and peaceful for those few moments before taking the stage. Good luck and have fun!! (:
